Best Car Chase on Film.

Car chases are ubiquitous in films, and they're usually terrible. A really good car chase can lift a mediocre film into acceptability and can make a good film great.

Best car chase ever? Discuss.

Blankman's favorites:

Ronin- Seeing how it must have been for Princess Diana cruising through the streets and tunnels of Paris at supersonic speeds.
The Italian Job (original)- greatest rooftop car circus ever!
The French Connection- White knuckle terrifying race to beat an elevated train- filmed with no permit, and no insurance!
The Blues Brothers- Just how many Chicago police cars can be destroyed in one film? Apparently all of them.
Bullitt (natch)

Ronin, no doubt. Very realistic, excellent stunt driving, fast european cars and nice scenery. My next choice would be Taxi from 1998, written by Luc Besson.

^What he said. Ronin's car chase was the best I've ever seen.

The first thing I thought of was Ronin. Followed by the Blues Brothers and The Fifth Element (ok, technically not a car, but still a great chase scene)

-The Transporter. How he escapes the police is really great. I thought was pretty good but the 2nd one was a bit too over the top.
-Transformers. It's gotta be a good chase scene when the semi turns into a two story robot.
-Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom. Not really a car chase but a mining cart went through some pretty crazy stuff.
-Bourne trilogy. Hard to pick one, not only do they have some wicked car chases but some great foot chases too.

Um, The French Connection, anyone? What, no love for Friedkin? And not to sound like some old fart here, but if you watch the chase scene from First Blood, that one was pretty gnarly too. Short, but it felt real.

For the wost car chase scene I would have to grant to Hawaii Five-O. I know not a film, but seriously McGarrett Is chasing this Crime Boss, and Danno is in a car behind McGarrett. Well it gets really fun when the perp goes into a multi level parking garage. And, I kid you not, for the next 2 min 16 seconds. All you hear is the screeching of tires and see the same 3 images over and over again. The bad guys car going up the circular ramp, McGarrett's car doing the same, and then Danno's car over and over. I just wish I could find the clip somewhere, the scene is so tedious.

my top 5:

Bullitt - look at the chase scene camerawork, before & after, this film. it's a little like watching buddy action movies, before & after Lethal Weapon.

French Connection - you have no idea, what it took, for that scene to be filmed. unless you DO know what it took, which is like 5 ppl here including me, in which case you know what i'm sayin'.

To Live And Die In L.A. - Friedkin does it again.

any chase scene from any of the Mad Max flicks

Blues Brothers - also funniest chase scenes ever

I will always pick Bullitt as certain scenes, such as when you see Bullit come over the hill behind the Dodge, are filmed as you see it. The shot was of the actual rearview mirror, in the actual car, with the actual driver in the shot, and the Mustang perfectly framed. No cut and paste, no camera tricks. It's the pure truth of it. Steve McQueen drives the Mustang except for the most risky of the stunts, while Hickman is driving the Charger. It's the closest to true I've seen.

I discount the Gone in 60 Seconds original movie as you've never heard of the guy and actually driving like that out in general public is just stupid.

Holy crap Ronin lame. It's clearly The Final Sacrifice, as featured by MST3k. Canadians FTW.

Nope. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. The Bourne Supremacy BMW chase is a close second, but nothing beats assless chaps and a hockey mask with an army of craaazzy Aussies bearing down on a train full of kids and a single shotgun.

I'll add Matrix 2 and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ronin was cool too - nothing like a rocket launcher to spice things up.
